Tips to Help You Enjoy Your Candles Safely:
-
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
-
Keep away from flammable materials, such as curtains or bedding.
-
Keep out of reach of children and pets.
-
Always burn on a heat-resistant surface.
-
Trim wicks to 1/4 inch before each burn and maintain a short wick during the burn process.
-
The first burn should last at least 2-4 hours to allow the wax to melt to the edges of the container. Subsequent burns should be limited to 4 hours each.
-
To help prevent tunneling, we recommend letting your candle burn until the melt pool reaches the sides of the container. Wax often only melts to the ridge on the first burn, so ensure subsequent burns are long enough for a complete melt.
-
If tunneling occurs, you can use a glass, metal, or ceramic candle holder to boost the heat of the container, which will soften the wax and create a complete melt pool.
-
Alternatively, wrapping aluminum foil around the top of the candle container can achieve similar results.
-
-
Shrinking: Beeswax naturally shrinks when cold, which may cause the wax to pull away from the sides of the container and potentially crack when cooling. However, these characteristics do not affect the quality of the burn.
-
Slight wax remnant (hang-up) on the sides of the candle jar (particularly with twist-top jars) during the first few burns (4 to 8 hours) is normal. As the flame lowers, the jar will heat up and melt the wax from the sides. This leftover wax helps keep the jar at a safe temperature when touched.
-
The best method for extinguishing a candle’s flame is by using a dipping tool. This prevents smoke and coats the wick in wax for better burning when relit.
